The quiet art of a useful follow-up.
A follow-up is easier to answer when it gives the conversation somewhere to go.
A good follow-up returns the recipient to the relevant context quickly. Name the conversation, decision, or piece of work you are writing about in the first sentence.
Add what has changed or what you need. If you are simply checking on an open question, restate it clearly. The recipient should not need to search an earlier thread to understand the next step.
Make the request proportionate. A clear question is often easier to answer than a general invitation to share thoughts. Include a date only when it serves a real need.
Before sending, check whether the message includes information the person needs to act. Courtesy comes through in clarity, reasonable expectations, and respect for their time.
An ETHEREAL editorial note.
