Before the list, look at the pantry.
A meal-planning ritual that begins with what you already have.
Open the cupboards before opening a recipe collection. Write down a few ingredients you would like to use and check their labels and condition as appropriate. This is an inventory, not a commitment to make everything at once.
Look at the week ahead. Pair ingredients with the meals you will realistically prepare, and keep a separate place for ideas that can wait.
Build the shopping list around what is missing from those meals. Keeping the plan and the inventory next to each other makes the connection easy to see.
At the end of the week, note which ingredients were useful and which plans changed. Over time, that record can help you build a personal set of reliable meal ideas.
