What makes a reading note useful?
Keep the idea, the source, and a question you want to return to.
A reading note does not have to preserve every sentence you liked. Its job is to help your future self recover an idea and understand why you kept it.
Start with the source and a short statement of the main point. Then write the idea in your own words. If you cannot explain part of it, leave a question rather than smoothing over the uncertainty.
Separate the author’s claim from your interpretation. Quotation marks, clear labels, and a page reference can keep those boundaries visible.
End with a connection or possible use. You might link the note to a project, another reading, or a question for a later session. That small bridge gives you a reason to return.
